Blog Entry 6/23/07: For Investigators - Equipment Selection

fultoncountyparanormalsociety Posted by fultoncountyparanormalsociety at 09:46 PM on June 24, 2007

I am curious as to what equipment other investigators are using on their cases.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE ITEMS WE ARE CURRENTLY USING:

This is a Digital Thermocouple K-Type Thermometer.

We use this rather than a Non-Contact Digital IR Thermometer because it measures variance in temperature from between the two K-Type Thermocouples, instead of surface temperature

Benefits:

  • Differential Temperature Measurement
  • Select between Celsius and Fahrenheit
  • Overload display alert when input exceeds measurement range
  • Hold mode ? holds current reading and ceases taking other measurements
  • Easily portable ? take it anywhere you need it
  • Robust casing
  • Large, clear LCD

General Specifications:

  • Display: 3 ½ digit liquid crystal display with maximum reading of 1999
  • Powered by: 1 9V battery
  • Power Current: approx DC 3mA (typical)
  • Dimensions of Thermometer: 5.5 (w) x 11.5 (l) x 3 (d)cm (2.5 x 4.7 x 1?)
  • Dimensions of Screen: 4 (w) x 2 (l)cm (1.6 x 0.8?)
  • Length of Thermocouples: 75cm (29.5?)
  • Weight (Including Battery): 190g

Electrical Specifications:

  • Temperature Scale: Celsius or Fahrenheit
  • Measurement range: -50°C to 1300°C (-58°F to 1999°F)
  • Resolution: 1°C or 1°F

Accuracy:

  • 0.1°C ± (0.3%rdg +1°C) -50°C to 199.9°C
    0.1°F ± (0.3%rdg +1°F) -58°F to 199.9°F
    1°C ± (0.3%rdg +2°C) -50°C to 1200°C
    1°C ± (0.6%rdg +2°C) 1200°C to 1300°C
    1°F ± (0.3%rdg +2°C) -58°C to 1200°C
    1°F ± (0.6%rdg +2°C) 1200°F to 1999°F
  • Temperature Coefficient: 0.1 x the applicable accuracy spec per °C from 0°C to 18°C and 28°C to 50°C (32°F to 64°F and 82°F to 122°F)
  • Input Protection: 60V DC or 24V AC max input voltage on any combination of input pins
  • Reading Rate: 2.5 times per second
  • Input Connector: Accepts standard miniature thermocouple connectors

Ive spent alot of time looking thru websites and chatrooms for a group to exchange information that holds the same ideals that I have. One thing that Ive noticed is that the majority of groups say that they investigate from a purely scientific point of view but then state that their collected "evidence" is backed up by the experiences wiccan princess and sensitive druid masters ect. I am not close minded to these things by all means, but I do think that if the field of paranormal research wants to be legitimate in the future than we need to focus the majority of our techniques on modern science and proven scientific equipment. Granted there are no tools specifically designed for "ghost hunting" but I am much more open to believing a video than the person perceptions of a self proclaimed sensitive. I may be alone in my thinking but I (as a common man) would feel alot more confident with investigators coming into my house if I did not have to wear a amullett(spelling) of protection, or conduct a ouiji demonstration before the investigation began. Where are all the level headed, mildly scheptical paranormal investigators. Question being, how does your group feel on this issue? Further more have you ever tried to use motion senstive cameras for investigations? I know they make a digital still camera for hunters that is set off by motion. When a deer walks in front of the sensor, the camera takes a picture. I lived in an apartment that had some strange things going on, cupboards opening, lights turning on, bumps in the night, that sort of thing. I set up a few motion sensors up around the place, but had to take them down after a few nights, do to them being constantly set off. (no signs of mice or any other infestation) Back to the point, I thought setting up one of these hunters cameras in a suspected haunted location may yield good results. Have you tried anything like this? Sean

I personally do not lend support towards those areas of the paranormal as to the fact that it is extremely difficult to test and re-test a feeling and get conclusive results. Not to say that I shun these people for their techniques or views because they are different from mine. Like you said it is more important that as a paranormal community we are rigorous and adhere to a strict scientific method when conducting investigations. As for the usage of motion sensitive cameras in investigations, I think that it could lend a positive aspect to investigations, given that all warm bodies are accounted for. One thing that may be a hinderence is small rodents and insects. A lot of motion equipment is highly sensitive to the slightest bit of kinetic energy. If used in a less variabled, more controlled setting I would think it could prove a very strong resource. I personally have never had the chance to try this technique. I have recently had trouble with a previous group and more or less had to try to start over. I appreciate your response I am sorry that it took so long for me to get back to you. I hope that we can keep in touch.

-FulCoPara<img alt="smile" src="http://images.freewebs.com/Images/Smilies/Round/smile.gif"&g

Excuse me. No matter what I do, no matter how predictable I try to make my life, it will not be any more predictable than the rest of the world. Which is chaotic. Help me! Can not find sites on the: Anti asthma. I found only this - benadryl dosing cat. Mumbai - it business as usual for indian pharmaceutical firms that lead the patent. Singulair montelukast in canadian pharmacy, brand generic. With respect , Hazelle from Nicaragua.
